October to March is Condensation season. Our phone never stops from homeowners suffering from mould due to condensation problems. When carrying out a survey, the first thing I tell people to do is copy the Germans!
Shock Ventilation is a ritual people do every morning and evening in Germany. They open all windows and doors for 20mins. This replaces the warm moist air with cooler fresh, dry air. It’s healthy and prevents mould and condensation from appearing.
What about my heating bills, I hear you say! Well, it costs more to heat warm, moist air, than it does dry air. If your property is warm before you open the windows, all the walls, furniture are warm too. So after you close the windows, the room temperature comes back up quite quickly.
It is more cost-effective doing Shock Ventilation than it is having windows open all day.
When bathing or having a shower, open the window, close the bathroom door. Keep the door shut while getting dry. Then while you get dressed in the bedroom, keep the bathroom door shut and the window open for 20mins. This allows the moisture to escape and not travel through the property, preventing mould and condensation.
I have seen some awful homes, full of black mould and very unhealthy to live in. If only the people living there did this every single day, the properties would not get like this.
